The state of New Jersey will pass a law that will make declawing of cats illegal. According to this new law the declawing will be criminal act of animal cruelty. Vets and pet owner will have to pay a $1000 fine and/or 6 months in jail.
The declawing is already banned in more than 20 countries in the world. In Europe these countries ban this inhuman procedure: Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, Italy, France, England and many more. Cat owners are declawing their cats to prevent the scratching on furniture. or hurting other animals or even babies.
The activists who are supporting this law said that this procedure is very painful for cats. With this procedure, the vet removes the bones from the paws. This can lead to permanent nerve damage of the poor kitties.
Many cat owners think this law would be simply amazing. This is in fact same as removing the tips of their fingers. Cats use them as tools to climb and stretch. Some studies have shown that many cats that had this practice are more aggressive and have problems with using the litter box, because it hurts.
On the other hand, many people are saying that this new law will make things even worse. Many cat owners will simply give away their cats to shelters. There they will probably be euthanized. We will see in the future, what will happen.
