Elephants can sometimes suffer from postpartum depression. This can caused mommy to harm her baby. This can happened in the captivity, but also in wild. Mom elephant can also do this as a result of a shock or stress from the birth.
They are very intelligent animals, but they have to learn from the older. Young should watch and learn from older generations how to care for their own young when the time will come. They should learn that they need to care for their babies.
Sometimes they reject and attack the newborn babies because they see them as threat or stranger. However, the staff in the facility did everything to comfort the baby elephant . They were feeding him and caring for him. Now he is doing well.
