William Grabill, a waste management worker, was doing his typical emptying, when he heard some strange meowing. He looked better and found six newborn kitties. Their umbilical cords were attached and their eyes were closed.

Sarah Varanini, foster care coordinator at the Sacramento SPCA (SSPCA) in California, told The Dodo it’s likely a street mom cat thought the dumpster was a very safe place to keep her kittens. The kitties were brought to the SSPCA and put into foster care with two staff members. Their eyes opened, and were developing and healthy.
Unfortunately, one of the kitties passed away about a week ago, Varanini told The Dodo, adding that it’s not unusual when raising such little kittens. The SSPCA said that one the kittens has been named William in Grabill’s honor. “The first time I spotted them, they had closed eyes,” Grabill said, during a Periscope video that captured his reunion with the kitties. “It looks like they are doing very well now.”
